This resource has been developed as a learning tool to enable you to proceed through the steps involved in the control of tuberculosis in Australia.

PrintLearning objectives

On completion of this learning resource, students should be able to:

  • Understand the components of a tuberculosis control program;
  • Understand how the system of notification and surveillance of tuberculosis is applied;
  • Analyze the qualities of screening tests and their application in screening programs;
  • Identify those groups that are at high risk of tuberculosis infection;
  • Understand the steps that should be undertaken in contact tracing for tuberculosis control;
  • Understand how chemoprophylaxis and BCG immunization are used in Australia;
  • Apply a culturally sensitive approach to screening ethnic minority and Aboriginal groups;
  • Understand the application of the legal aspects of tuberculosis control;
  • Develop key aspects of a monitoring system to assess the major outcomes of tuberculosis control.
